If you want to know the odds of getting heads up, you take the number of possible sides of the coin that have heads (1) and divide that into the number of sides on the coin (2) and you get the odds of 1 in 2.

Now think of a pair of dice and ask what the odds are of rolling a pair of 5's. Well each dice has 6 sides so there is a total of 36 possible outcomes, but only one outcome would be a pair of 5's. So when the 2 dice are rolled, you have a 1 in 36 chance of rolling a pair of 5's.

So what happens if you put one dice on the table with 5 already up and all you have to do is roll one dice to get a pair of 5's? Well since one dice is already on 5 you only have 6 possible outcomes.
