At the time I am writing this I am sitting just over 24 hours away from heading back to the midwest for a vacation over the week of July 4th. I am looking forward to it since this will be my first extended vacation in.....*thinks and ponders*....well, damn....quite a while.
It will be nice to be away from the office, and hopefully the weather will cooperate and the week will be filled with cookouts, drinking, sitting out on porches, drinking, golfing, and .....well, other restful things. And drinking. There definitely will not be a shortage of things to do and people to see. Not when my dad is the oldest of 9 kids and my mom is one of 7 kids. Highlights hopefully will include seeing the first daughter of one of my favorite cousins and my parents 35th wedding anniversary.
But this already will be different than the last trip that was made to see all these relatives in March of 2006. That trip was made very hastily and under stress due to the declining health of my grandmother, who passed away the day after we got back to see her. But let me tell you, we threw one hell of a wake for her. My dad and his brothers and sisters all agreed that grandma would of been smiling down on the family that evening. That was also the first time I had seen a bartender keep a bar open past closing, then regret it a few hours later and ask us if we minded leaving because she would like to sleep a few hours before starting her day job.
So, anyways....I hope everyone has a happy 4th of July, spending it with family and friends, and hopefully remember the reason for the day.
And, if you're one to be playing with fireworks, please remember two simple steps to fireworks enjoyment: (1) Light, then (2) throw. Repeat after me. (1) Light, then (2) throw. Do not (1) throw, then (2) stare. Nothing happens. No boom. No flash. Nothing. Also, do not (1) light, then (2) hold while laughing like an idiot. This will lead to the unfortunate condition of not being able to count to ten on two hands, and have an adverse affect on your typing ability.
And as for me.....well, if I wasn't with friends or family, I would be out someplace creating some fireworks of my own, enjoying my own little piece of American history:

Take care, be safe, see everyone in a while.
