December 2007 - Posts

Almost the end....

Well here I am, now officially at 12:22 am (or about) on New Year's eve, the last day of the year. How the time has gone by these last 365 days, hasn't it? Well, it seems that way for me.

Being a sunday night / monday morning, I would typically be asleep, or getting ready for bed, and preparing for the start of a new work week. But, work at the office has been slow since before Christmas, which is typical for us, and we have been catching up on filing and archiving for the last week or so. So, I am taking monday off of work, and preparing to head out of town for New Year's. Not very far, only about an hour and a half away, but it is much better to ring in the New Year among friends and family in my opinion. It will be a good time, spent between catching up with friends I have not seen in a while, playing poker, and just hanging out. Toss in a wide spread of food and various alcoholic beverages and it has always been an enjoyable time.

But, before that can happen, the weekend has been spent removing the house from Christmas Battlestations. The tree has been taken down and packaged up for another year. Ornaments and lights put away. Cookies and candies received over the last few weeks finished off. Dining room returned to normal configuration. Christmas cards. Well, I think I will leave those up a bit longer. They are out of the way along the frame of an opening between my dining room and my kitchen. And there are a few there that certainly bring a smile to my face when I look at them. After that it has just been assorted house chores, cleaning up tree needles, putting away dishes, doing laundry.

Then finally sitting down to enjoy the evening. And tonight, with a slight chill in the air, and not much else to do, I figured it was time for a nice evening by a fire. It has been a while since I had the relaxing smell of burning fireplace, and what better way to relax tonight by sitting on the floor near the fireplace with a bit of tv. So I did.

It was also a nice time to reflect a bit on this past year and what I wonder what the new one holds in store for me. I do think I am looking forward to 2008 a bit more than I have any other years in a while. We shall just see where it takes me.

Merry Christmas all....

I hope everyone had a nice time with friends and family and gifts and food.

I gorged myself on ham, scalloped potatoes, and bread rolls. Too full to enjoy any of the chocolate cheese cake that we had for dessert. But luckily for me, everyone else was too full as well. As a result, I now have a half of a chocolate cheesecake in my fridge to enjoy this week. ALL FOR ME!! WHEEE! WHEEE! WHEEE! Of course, along with all the other wonderful cookies and candies I have been given this last week, I will be eating sweets easily through the New Year. :)

So, please enjoy this wonderful misteltoe video:

Scientists study monkey sex......

Yes, someone is being paid to study this. With some additional comments of mine after the article below.

Study Reveals Why Monkeys Shout During Sex

By Charles Q. Choi, Special to LiveScience

posted: 18 December 2007 08:33 pm ET

Female monkeys may shout during sex to help their male partners climax, research now reveals.

Without these yells, male Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) almost never ejaculated, scientists found.

Female monkeys often utter loud, distinctive calls before, during or after sex. Their exact function, if any, has remained heavily debated.

Counting pelvic thrusts

To investigate the purpose behind these calls, scientists at the German Primate Center in Göttingen focused on Barbary macaques for two years in a nature reserve in Gibraltar.

The researchers found that females yelled during 86 percent of all sexual encounters. When females shouted, males ejaculated 59 percent of the time. However, when females did not holler, males ejaculated less than 2 percent of the time.

To see if yelling resulted from how vigorous the sex was, the scientists counted the number of pelvic thrusts males gave and timed when they happened. They found when shouting occurred, thrusting increased. In other words, hollering led to more vigorous sex.

Counting monkey pelvic thrusts is admittedly "quite weird, but it's science," researcher Dana Pfefferle, a behavioral scientist and primatologist at the German Primate Center, told LiveScience. "You get used to it."

Quite promiscuous

Male and female Barbary macaques are promiscuous, often having sex with many partners. This means sperm levels can get quite drained. The females shout when they are most fertile, so males can make the most use of their sperm.

Pfefferle noted her research suggests these calls might also make females more attractive to other males. She added these shouts might play different roles in other species.

Pfefferle and her colleagues detailed their findings online Dec. 18 in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

My first thought after discussing this article with a friend of mine made me think back to college, and summer internships. Can you think of that discussion after you got back to school in the fall? The professor up in front of the class, talking to their students. "So Jenny, how was your summer internship with the zoo?" Jenny kind of fidgets for a second. "Well, I spent alot of my time around the monkeys observing the number and rate of pelvic thrusting." Uhm...oooook.

Which then lead to an unfortunate band name discussion with the same friend. Well, it can either be an unfortunate band name or the most awesomest thing ever.

Now opening for Metallica.....welcome to the stage, PELVIC THRUST MONKEY!!!!!!

What do you think? Yes? No? What the hell are you drinking at 5:45 already bear?

Peanuts Hey Ya

Well, this is a bit old, but it is a Christmas favorite.....Hey Ya by Outkast, as set to Charlie Browns Christmas clips.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=KGnYw-OuCnI

And now on to the blog of thoughts. So here we are 7 days till Christmas. How is everyone doing?

Going mad from shopping? Have you finished your shopping? I think I am just about done. I wouldn't mind maybe getting another thing or two for my mom and dad, but if Christmas was tomorrow, I wouldn't feel bad about it. The most interesting thing I believe I have bought this year was a wall hanging jewelry box for my mom. She had mentioned she had wanted it, and showed me a picture of it, and I thought, well, lets see what this involves. Wowsers....I hope she realises how big it is when I give it to her. But, the front of it is a big segmented picture gallery. So I have gone through and sorted through a bunch of family pictures I have and I am going to put them in the frame before I close the box back up and wrap it. Going all the way from my parents wedding in Hawaii way back when, through the years  here and there up to myself dressed as Taz a few months ago. A mix of pictures of me as I was growing up and family pictures here and there. I think she will like it.

So what about other people while you are out shopping this time of year? I tend to come across people in general that probably shouldn't be allowed to leave the house. Ever. What is it that people think just because its the holiday season they have the "right" to be mean, selfish, arrogant, and disrespectful, as if what they are doing that very second is more important than anything else in the world. And if they think that, then I certainly feel obliged to go around with my little hammer of smiting and smack these people right between the eyes. It may not change their attitudes. I am sure it won't help any situations I am in. But it would at least go quite a long way to improve my mental health through the holidays. Big Smile

So, through the next week, stay centered, enjoy the days, have fun, and have a Merry Christmas.

Calvin and Hobbes - The Snowmen

One of my favorite parts of wintertime was the Calvin and Hobbes snowmen strips. Where Calvin would make the snowmen in odd situations, or in obvious states of distress. Well, a few days ago I came across this handy little site that has alot of them all online. I do not know if it is all of them, but maybe for some of you people that actually get snow in the winter time, it will give you some ideas to try and share with the rest of us.

December 7 - Take a moment

December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Take a moment to thank those that served the world in those years after Pearl Harbor. What they did with their lives and their unselfishness to serve their country and the world in those years after Pearl Harbor was probably unlike anything done since the American Revolution, and something that will probably never be matched again.

Take a moment to remember those that you know that have served us in our military.
